PCOS and Fitness: My Journey to Finding a Workout Routine That Works for Me

As someone who’s been battling PCOS since my college days, I know firsthand how chaotic it can make life. But I’m not one to shy away from a challenge – quite the opposite, in fact! So after realizing what I was doing wasn’t working, I decided to take back control by getting back in the groove with working out and eating cleaner.

I’ve always known that working out is important, but with PCOS and insulin resistance, it’s been tough to see those numbers on the scale move. BUT, I’ve finally found something that works for me – WEIGHTS!

Actually, credit goes to my friend Lisa, for being the one to beat it into my head that I won’t see real change until I add weights into my regime!

I decided to work with a personal trainer, as a true trainer isn’t trying to sell you a quick fix. They’re there to navigate your unique struggles and work with you to create a personalized plan that addresses your specific needs. Plus, having someone to hold you accountable is icing on the cake! Knowing that I don’t enjoy weightlifting on my own, and that I worry about form, doing this with a skilled professional has been helpful.

PCOS and Muscle Mass: Why You Should Be Lifting Weights

If you are tired of feeling like PCOS is holding you back from living the life you want, the good news is that weight lifting can help. Not only can it help you build strength and confidence, but it can also improve your overall health and reduce symptoms of PCOS.

Resistance training like weight lifting can help regulate insulin levels, which is often disrupted in women with PCOS.

Weight lifting can also increase testosterone levels, which can help improve ovulation and fertility. By incorporating weight lifting into your fitness routine, you can also boost your mood and reduce stress, which are common side effects of PCOS. Plus, the more muscle mass you have, the higher your metabolism will be, which can help with weight loss and management. With the right guidance and support, you can start experiencing the benefits of weight lifting for PCOS and taking control of your health, which is exactly why I began my journey with a trainer.

Here are a few reasons to get pumped about working out and working with a personal trainer:

  • You’ll have someone in your corner to support and motivate you

If you need motivation (and let’s be real, we all do sometimes), try getting a cute outfit. Regardless of size, there are so many great places to find a perfect ootd for the gym. As a size 14, I know that finding clothes that fit well and stay in place can be a struggle. But, Alo’s gear has been a lifesaver for me. Not only does it fit well, but it’s also super cute and functional.

If you take nothing else away from this post, take this: It’s crucial to remember that everyone’s journey is unique, and while your path may be slightly more complex than others, it doesn’t mean it’s impossible. With the right mindset and support, you can do anything, besties. Don’t forget to prioritize your self-care and seek help from a qualified trainer or specialist when needed. And most importantly, don’t lose sight of your progress – celebrate your small victories and never stop showing up for yourself.
