I Tried a Lot of Natural Deodorants. These Are the Ones I’d Actually Buy Again

I’ve tried enough natural deodorants to know that finding a good one is harder than it should be.

There are the ones with beautiful packaging and questionable staying power, the ones that smell great for about an hour, and the ones that somehow leave you feeling both sticky and under-deodorized. I kept trying, though, because I do prefer an aluminum-free deodorant. I just don’t want to sacrifice the part where it actually works.

After plenty of trial and error, I’ve narrowed it down to four favorites: First Aid Beauty, Nécessaire, Salt & Stone, and Kopari. And yes, I have a favorite.

  1. First Aid Beauty
First Aid Beauty wasn’t even the one I expected to love.
I picked up the Underarm Deodorant Cream during a 50% off sale at Anthropologie and figured, what better time to try it? I wasn’t expecting to be wowed. It was more of a casual “sure, I’ll give it a shot” purchase.

And now it’s my main go-to.

The cream formula isn’t messy, dries quickly, and has a subtle but really pleasant scent. It’s fresh and clean without being overly perfumed, and it actually lasts through the day for me.

I also like that it doesn’t leave my underarms feeling sticky or coated. You apply it, let it dry for a moment, and move on. There’s no fuss and, thankfully, no midday panic about whether your deodorant gave up three hours ago.

Sometimes the random sale purchase turns out to be the good one.

Best for: Everyday wear, sensitive underarms, and anyone who prefers a quick-drying cream formula.

  1. Nécessaire
Nécessaire comes in a close second and takes a more skincare-focused approach to deodorant.
The formula includes mandelic acid, aloe, and vitamin E. Mandelic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that provides gentle exfoliation, while aloe and vitamin E help keep the skin feeling comfortable.

I like that you don’t need much of it, and the scent is clean without being overpowering. It also feels more like skincare than a typical deodorant, which I appreciate.

If you’re picky about what you put on your skin, and value simplicity and reliability, Nécessaire is a good one to try.

Best for: Skincare lovers and anyone who likes an ingredient-focused formula.

  1. Salt & Stone
Salt & Stone is probably the most understated of the four.
The scents are fresh and clean without being overpowering, which I appreciate because I don’t necessarily want my deodorant competing with my perfume. The formula also goes on smoothly and doesn’t leave behind a thick or sticky layer.

It’s easy to use and easy to like. There’s not much to figure out, which is exactly how I want deodorant to feel.

Best for: Fresh scents, minimalist routines, and anyone who wears fragrance.

  1. Kopari
    Kopari rounds out my list.
The coconut oil-based formula has a creamy texture and a light tropical scent. There’s definitely a coconut note, but it doesn’t veer into coconut candle territory, which is important.

I actually wore Kopari for about five years straight after discovering it while I was working at Free People, so calling it a longtime favorite would be an understatement. It was one of the first natural deodorants I tried that I genuinely wanted to keep using, and I still think it’s a really good everyday option.

The creamy texture and soft, warm scent are probably what kept me coming back for so long. It’s comfortable, easy to use, and has that subtle coconut note without smelling like you’ve wandered into the candle aisle at Anthropologie.

It’s fourth on my list now only because I’ve found a few others I reach for more often. That doesn’t really say much about Kopari, though. Five years is a pretty solid run.

If you’re a tropical-scent person, though, you may rank this one much higher.

Best for: Creamy textures and subtle tropical fragrance.

Before You Make the Switch

If you’re thinking about trying a natural deodorant or switching to an aluminum-free deodorant, there’s one thing worth knowing first: deodorant and antiperspirant aren’t the same thing.

Antiperspirants are designed to reduce sweating. Deodorants are mainly designed to help control odor. So if you switch from an antiperspirant and suddenly notice that you’re sweating more, that doesn’t necessarily mean your new deodorant isn’t working. You’re just using a product with a different job.

And you don’t necessarily need an “armpit detox.” Your body isn’t storing years of deodorant under your arms. If a new formula doesn’t work for you, it may simply not be the right one.

The basics are pretty simple. Apply deodorant to clean, dry skin, don’t use more product than you need, and pay attention to how your skin reacts. If something burns, itches, or causes a persistent rash, stop using it. Natural ingredients can still irritate skin.

I’ve also found that the best deodorant for you depends on your actual life. What works on a quiet day at home may not be the same product you want for a workout, a long travel day, or a very hot afternoon.

I started trying natural deodorants because I wanted an aluminum-free option I could actually live with. I didn’t expect to have such strong opinions about the category, but here we are.

The difference, I’ve found, is mostly in the little things. A formula that doesn’t stay wet. A scent you don’t get tired of. Something that doesn’t make you think about your underarms all day.

That’s what separates a deodorant I finish from one I forget about in the back of the cabinet.

And, for what it’s worth, the one I bought on a 50% off whim is now the one I’m reaching for every morning. Sometimes you can research something to death and still miss the thing that ends up working best for you. Other times, you just get lucky and throw something in your cart on sale. You never really know.
