Making the Boho look work for you

It’s no secret that I love clothes. I also love styling others and helping them live their fashion dreams, while being comfortable. Before the pandemic hit during my spare time outside of my office job you could find me at Free People where I worked for several years styling women of all ages, sizes and styles.

The core feedback customers would give is “I love this store and the clothes, but how do I wear it in real life?”

If you ever felt like those customers, then you’re going to want to read on. Because today I’m breaking down how you can incorporate a little bit of the boho look into your wardrobe.

The bohemian style is all about going with the flow and letting your personality shine. At its core, being boho is about embracing your own unique style and wearing it with confidence.

The best thing about the boho look is that everyone can do it. If you’re edgy, ultra-feminine, or somewhere in between — there’s a way to own your boho look!

Where are my boho babes that like a little edge? I’m wearing a SPELL short robe, paired with an Anthropologie mini dress, and topped off with a Lack of Color hat…and Doc Martens! The contrast of feminine and rock and roll works wonders here.

I told you everyone can go boho. Crazy, right?

Here are some tips on how I style bohemian dresses (and skirts):

  • Layer your look around your central piece
  • Add accessories
    • They are your friend. Sometimes your outfit won’t need a huge touch of pizzazz, but a hat, vest or set of bangles can work wonders.

Let’s go deeper though

Layering

Whether I’m in a dress or skirt that leans more boho, I love to layer around the piece. This means adding a leather or denim jacket. If I’m feeling edgy, I will do Docs, a leather jacket.

If I want to be more airy, I’ll pair a kimono with a shorter dress, and then a bootie.

Of course, some days (or nights) you might want to feel like a boho goddess while lounging around the house. What better way to unwind than in a chic, silky robe? 90% of my robes are SPELL. I love how SPELL robes can be dressed up or down, and easily transition from the house to out and about.

Here are some of my favorite boho looks

Because I am always on the go, I tend to go for an easy (but cute) look – perfect for roaming the city. A quality pair of booties goes SO far. In many of my pictured looks you will see several repeat styles! I have two pairs that I wear non stop including a vintage SPELL Zephyr bootie, and some Rag & Bone booties!

With premium designers, it’s imperative to calculate your cost per wear. And start with a neutral color that you will wear often…this way you don’t have buyer’s remorse!

I love how a hat and jacket can instantly elevate your look. And because I live in Texas, being able to easily transition my look is important as our weather is so up and down!

If you’re going all in

Committed to channeling your inner Stevie? Take a page from my book and do a bold lipstick like this one from Gucci! I enjoy pairing a boho dress with a maxi robe, and completing the look with some booties and a matching hat.

Of course you could always ditch the maxi robe, and do a faux fur jacket! Free People always has a great range of jackets for every budget. With fall not that far away, check out this jacket edit on my LTK!

Keeping it Casual?

I get it. Why complicate things with a ton of extra junk you won’t wear in a week. Cool, check out these simple looks for inspo!

When you’re trying to look like a true boho goddess, you need to own the look and make it your own. And just know there’s no right or wrong way to do that.

There are so many different ways to style your favorite boho dresses and skirts, but hopefully you leave this blog post feeling a little bit inspired knowing there is no wrong way to dress boho.

I love that hat and the flowy dresses. I’m usually a total sweat pants and jeans girl but I like this style.

I love a good sweats or jeans day too! And the cool thing is a boho top and jeans are always a vibe too. Thank you for reading!
