It was the summer of 2014. I was high on life, having recently moved out of my parent’s house. I was taking a stab at this adulting thing. One of my first big purchases with my newfound freedom and “adult” money was a ticket to the Vans Warped Tour.
Naturally, I saw all of my favorites, but the band I was most stoked for? The Summer Set.
And I remember seeing them live on the Electric Soul Stage as if it were yesterday.
This was a band I felt like I grew up with.
I can’t tell you how many times I would be screaming the lyrics to The Boys You Do (Get Back At You) or Chelsea while driving to class.
Not to date myself, but I remember purchasing the deluxe edition of Love Like This from Walmart the summer after graduating high school.
Like any fan, I was bummed when they took a hiatus, but I understood.
So imagine my surprise when they popped up on my Spotify 5 years later with the serotonin-boosting banger that is Street Lightning.
And then they gave us a December to remember, with the appropriately titled track Back Together, confirming they weren’t leaving any time soon.
It was like I was a teenager all over again.
What made this reunion so special, is that the band evolved and grew, just like most of us.
When I read what lead singer Brian Logan Dales shared on insta, I nearly bawled because I especially could relate to the need to go back to your roots to find yourself. While it ultimately led to the band getting back together, it just felt nice to know that this dude was someone that at his core was just like the rest of us.
I don’t know about you, but I couldn’t think of a better way to end 2021 than with new jams from The Summer Set. They make music that feels like home. That’s the only way to describe it, and I can’t wait for them to tour in 2022, because your girl has adult money now, baby!
